Intermediate Short Fiction: Refining Your Work for Submission with Rita Chang-Eppig

If you’re serious about improving your craft and preparing your short stories for submission to journals/magazines, this class is for you. In this 6-week class, the focus will be on workshopping your fiction and deep-diving into craft, centering works by marginalized authors. Students are expected to have taken previous writing classes and to understand the basics of craft elements like description, POV, etc. because we will be building on (or, in some cases, tearing down) our understanding of what “good craft” is. Please make sure you have at least one story ready for workshopping by the start of the class so that you can take full advantage of the class.

Workshops will take up approximately 50% of class time, followed by writing exercises and class discussions. Homework will be assigned most weeks to encourage students to practice/experiment with elements of craft.

Enrollment for this class will be capped early so the instructor can dedicate personalized attention to each student’s work. This class is time intensive, so be prepared to set aside at least several hours each week in addition to class time. This class will meet on Zoom. Registered students, please contact the instructor directly for Zoom details.
