Adoption, Kinship & Family: A Writing Workshop with Susan Ito

This is a writing workshop designed exclusively for adopted people, formerly fostered individuals and those born via surrogacy or donor conception. These life experiences have a unique impact and these voices and narratives have often been invisible or silenced. The intention is to create a safe and supportive space for all stories to be heard and acknowledged. We will read and generate work in a variety of genres, including poetry, flash memoir and imaginary narratives. This class will meet as a group via Zoom. I will also hold private conferences with each student at a time that is mutually convenient.

The instructor is a domestically adopted person who edited the anthology, A Ghost At Heart’s Edge: Stories & Poems of Adoption, and whose adoption memoir is forthcoming in 2023.

We will read a number of adoption-themed works by published authors and possibly include some guest speakers. Using these as inspiration, we will write our own words, designed to evoke and unearth the unknown, the hidden, and the unexpressed narratives of our experience. We will not be aiming for polished work during our time together, although this may occur.

To determine eligibility for this class, please send an email to susanito@mac.com briefly describing your experience and why you want to take this particular workshop.

There will be a number of partial scholarships available, in addition to the early-bird discount. Please indicate if you would need financial support in order to participate.

Scheduled class sessions will take place via Zoom. Registered students, please contact the instructor directly for Zoom details.
